| let go of your political agendas. i dont care who you voted for... republican, democratic, libertarian, independent or even the green party. i dont care. for one of the few times in my life, i am truly PROUD of my country. i am proud to be an american. dont you see that we're living through history? just as we lived through 9/11, the presidential election of 2008 marks a time of change. mccain was thoroughly qualified. he would have made a wonderful president. obama, sure his middle name is hussein. yes, he knows some crazy anti-american people... and yes, he surely isnt as experienced in politics as mccain...
but political opinions aside, i'm proud of america. i am so happy that the majority of the popular vote was able to get over the prejudice and biases based on the color of skin. i dont deny that racism still exists... but for a non-white man to become the leader of this country surely shows change towards a better america. im not saying that everything is going to be all good now... obama faces some MAJOR trials... but this is surely a step in the right direction to a country where people arent judged by the color of their skin, but perhaps by something more. do you realize how big of a deal it is that a woman was this close to being the vice president of america? race and gender aside, surely america is changing for the better.
how wonderful is it that for some reason so many young people are fired up about a cause... this cause... their future? i dont know why and i cant explain it, but it brings tears to my eyes... i am just so proud and happy for america--my country. all of these young people felt the need to make a difference and let their voices be heard. now do i think that many people voted obama because thats what youre supposed to do? yes i do. but i dont doubt for a second that some people... many people... particularly young people felt compelled to learn about the issues and to voice their opinions to try to make a difference. it leaves me in awe that young people went out to vote in droves. many of my friends went obama... but many went mccain as well... this is our country and our future and the election of 2008 sparked a fire in many of us. will this fire die out? yes, most likely... but this is a start, isnt it?
the minority and the young votes made a huge difference this year. people who normally dont vote felt compelled to vote. this seems like a new beginning. a new chapter in american history... many months ago i was speaking to a well educated woman about the primaries. she was saying, in a quite serious tone how she couldnt trust a presidential candidate with the last name obama... i mean seriously? give me a different reason than that, woman. thats just not pc or right. we have a long way to go as a country... we have a long way to go before becoming the free world that we want to be... but i believe that this is a step in the right direction. (hopefully some crazy redneck bigot wont assassinate him...)
nonetheless, congratulations mr. president, youre in for one hell of a ride. get ready for haters, trials and tribulations... but america voted. you convinced us about your ability for a changed america, so its now your time to shine. we're on your side, sir (for now anyway)... its your big day... now make us proud. |
